最近、「眉毛の上げ下げ」に関する興味深い話が書かれた本を読みました。おもしろいことに、それまでわたしはこのジェスチャーについては何ら意識していなかったのです。西洋諸国をはじめとするほぼすべての文化圏で、眉毛を上げ下げするジェスチャーには「こんにちは」という意味があります。ところが、日本人はこれをまったくしません。眉毛の上げ下げはほんの一瞬の動作であり、1秒もかからないほどです。まさにあっという間の出来事なので、見逃してしまうことも多いかもしれませんね。次に外国人と会う機会があったり、テレビを見たりする場合は、少し離れた場所に知り合いがいるのを見つけた人が眉毛をどう動かすのか、注目してみましょう。距離が遠すぎるので声を出しても聞こえませんから、おそらく「やあ」と挨拶はせずに眉毛を上げ下げして合図を送るはずです。また、知人に挨拶をする前に眉毛を動かすことも多々あります。これが初めて会う知らない人が相手だと、眉毛を動かすジェスチャーはしません。つまり眉毛の上げ下げは、好意を抱いている既知の人物だけを対象にしたコミュニケーションなのです。わざわざこうした背景を説明したのは、日本では離れた場所から知人に挨拶をする際は軽く頭を下げ、同時に目線も一瞬下に向けて相手をみとめたことを表すのが一般的だからです。これは外国の挨拶習慣とはかなり異なっていますから、日本人には普通の所作であっても、頭と目線を下げると「顔を背けて」「無視をした」と取られかねないことを覚えておきましょう。外国では、眉毛をちょっと動かして挨拶を交わします。さらに、（手を振るなどして）相手の存在に気づいたという合図を送れたなら最高ですね。そしてもちろん、遠くにいるだれかが微笑みながら眉毛を動かす仕草を見せた場合は、手を振ったり会釈をしたりしていなくても、その人物はあなたに気づいたことになるのです。

I have read about the “eyebrow” flash recently in a book. Interesting enough that until then I have not consciously realized the gesture. The Eyebrow flash is a “hello” sign used in nearly all cultures, especially Western cultures. The interesting point is that Japanese do not use the gesture at all. The eyebrow flash is when a person raises the eyebrows upwards for just a second or even shorter than a second. It is more like a flash and you hardly recognize it. Next time you meet a foreigner or if you are watching TV, look what the eyebrows do when people meet from a distance. They maybe do not say “hello” to each other as the distance from one person to the other is too large to get heard but they will greet each other by flashing the eyebrows. Many people flash the eyebrows before greeting the other person. Strangers or people, you do not know, are not greeted with this Eyebrow flash, which means only people who are liked and who know each other greet this way. Why I am mentioning this is, that Japanese use the nodding of their head to greet each other from the distance and they lower their eyes for just a second to show acknowledgement to the other person. The way of greeting is different and therefore when you as a Japanese are in a different country, make sure that the nodding of the head or lowering your eye to break the eye contact is not perceived as “looking away” and “being ignorant”. Foreigners will probably flash the Eyebrow and the best way is to give a sign (with your hand for example) to show you have seen him and have acknowledged him. And if a person passes by from a distance and flashes the eyebrow with a smiling face you know he has seen you and acknowledged you, even if he or she does not wave the hand or nod the head.
